ICC Secretary General Jean Rozwadowski has underscored the crucial role of the private sector in attaining the internationally agreed set of targets to halve extreme poverty known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In his address to the UN General Assembly High Level Dialogue on Financing for Development, which took place at UN headquarters last week in New York, Mr Rozwadowski also urged the UN to deliver on financing for development commitments in order to achieve the goals.

“Mobilizing the private sector is a critical component of strengthening the financing for development process, increasing aid effectiveness and achieving the Millennium Development Goals,” Mr Rozwadowki told member states during an informal, interactive dialogue.

The two-day session, whose overall theme was “The Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration on Financing for Development: status of implementation and tasks ahead”, was considered to be an important step in generating input for the UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals. Convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the summit, which aims to boost progress towards the MDGs, will take place on 20-22 September this year.

Governments and the UN increasingly recognize that the business community is an important partner in achieving the MDGs and that more extensive and deeper collaboration with the private sector is required.

In a private meeting with Mr Rozwadowski on 23 March, the current President of the General Assembly Ali Treki acknowledged ICC’s long history of bringing the views of business to the UN and asserted that the private sector is a critical partner for achieving the UN’s development agenda. Mr Rozwadowski reaffirmed ICC’s support for the MDGs and expressed appreciation of the UN as a platform for the private sector to engage with governments on critical global issues.

During his visit to New York, Mr Rozwadowski also attended the Global Compact Board Meeting opened by Mr Ban. ICC played an important role in developing and launching the Global Compact at the UN ten years ago, and has served as an active board member since then.
